Four years ago, the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was signed into law.

Today, the fight to renew it begins.

Four years ago today, President Obama Signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

The President’s signature was a simple act – a few strokes of a pen. But getting the legislation to his desk was a huge effort over many years. This fight required the collective efforts of thousands of 9/11 responders and survivors from New York and around the nation, their friends and families, elected officials, and many other Americans who simply were shocked that Washington wasn’t helping those who rushed to Ground Zero to help our nation recover from the attacks.

The programs created by the Zadroga Act are helping those injured or made ill by the toxic aftermath of 9/11. The World Trade Center Health Program is providing medical treatment and monitoring for almost 70,000 responders and survivors in every State of the Union and in 429 of 435 Congressional Districts. The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is starting to compensate both those who were injured as a result of 9/11 and the families of those who passed away as a result of their service to the nation.

But this law, which is providing such crucial help to so many people who really deserve it, expires with this new session of Congress that starts next week. In the coming months, our champions in Congress, Representatives Maloney, Nadler and King and Senators Gillibrand and Schumer, along with many others, will re-introduce the legislation to renew the Zadroga Act – and when they do, we’ll face a significant challenge from the new Congress. We’ll have to work together to convince them to do the right thing and renew and extend health care and compensation for injured and ill 9/11 responders and survivors.

In the weeks to come, we will be sharing more details on how you can help, but today, please share this message with your friends and family and ask them to join us at https://www.renew911health.org/.

Together, we will stand up for the heroes, heroines, and survivors of the worst-ever attacks on our nation.
